You might be interested in buying a window hummingbird feeder. These feeders are ideal for children who want to see hummingbirds up close, windows outside home offices, and people with limited mobility. An advantage of these feeders is that you can view birds much closer than you can with other feeders, which can be very rewarding. However, some people are reluctant to buy window feeders because of a few reasons.
First, there is the concern that hummingbirds will be constantly flying into the window. This is not really as big of an issue as you would think however. First of all, common sense tells us that hummingbirds are going to want to land on the feeder, not fly over it fast enough to injure themselves. In fact, most of the time hummingbirds are pushed into the window by other, more territorial birds. Nevertheless, it does happen sometimes and luckily, there are ways around this concern. The best way is to simply drop the blinds over the window and tilt them so you can still view the birds, but they can also see that there is an obstacle there. If you don’t have blinds you can tape up a couple strips of colored paper or streamers on the window. You could also hang plants, stick decals, or anything that would make the window look like an obstacle. Look at it from a bird’s perspective and think of what would hinder them from trying to fly through it.
Some people are afraid their window feeder will fall off the window and shatter on the ground. Window feeders typically come with strong suction cups that stick on to the window, and while these can come unstuck, it is not likely as long as your window is clean before sticking them on, and you make sure they are firmly planted. Remember, hummingbirds only weigh .10 to .20 ounces which is about the weight of a penny, so even if you had four or five hummers feeding at one time, they wouldn’t put any strain on the feeder.
A final area of concern is the worry that people inside the house will scare off the birds. This is just something you will have to work around if you want to buy a window mount hummingbird feeder. Hummingbirds will usually be distracted with drinking the nectar so you will be able to sit and watch them. Just be careful that you do not walk into the room too quickly when there are birds at the feeder, because they can be scared off. You don’t have to worry about it too much though, hummingbirds are spunky little creatures and after a while, they will not be afraid to come up and sip that nectar.
